The Celestial Kiss: Recapping the Last Full Moon with an Eclipse
If you missed the last time the Earth, Moon, and Sun aligned for a stunning celestial show, don't worry—we've got the recap! The most recent full moon to be accompanied by an eclipse was the Partial Lunar Eclipse that occurred on October 28-29, 2023.
The Event: A Nibble of Shadow
This wasn't a total eclipse that plunges the Moon into deep crimson, but a more subtle and equally fascinating event.
The Moon: This was the Hunter's Moon, the traditional name for the full moon following the Harvest Moon.
The Eclipse Type: A Partial Lunar Eclipse. This happens when only a portion of the Moon passes into the darkest part of Earth's shadow, the umbra. For observers, this meant one edge of the bright full moon appeared noticeably darker or "nibbled on" by the Earth's shadow.
Visibility: Sky-watchers in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Western Australia were perfectly positioned to witness this beautiful shadow play.
A partial lunar eclipse is a beautiful reminder of the three-body dance between our planet, its satellite, and the Sun. It shows how the Earth's shadow is cast into space and occasionally catches the Moon, dimming its brilliant light.
